Can Dogs Eat Paprika? (This Could Surprise You)

In: Archives, Can Dogs Eat

Can dogs eat paprika? There’s my dog again sitting at my feet looking straight up at me, waiting for me to feed him the food I’m eating…

Sound familiar?

This time I’m eating food with paprika in it. I wasn’t really sure, so I did some research to see is paprika safe for dogs.

I’m so glad I did because I came away with excellent information about the spice that I found helped make a decision about feeding it to my dog or not.

I’m sure other dog owners might be having the same concern about it as I was, so I want to share what I found out with you all below.

Can Dogs Have Paprika

After doing research, It becomes clear that paprika isn’t something we dog owners shouldn’t be giving to our dogs.

So the answer would be no!

Other questions you might also be asking yourself is… Can dogs eat food seasoned with paprika? that answer would be no as well.

Also, if you ask, Can dogs eat paprika powder? that is also a big no.

Keep on reading to hear why:

is paprika good for dogs

What Is Paprika?

Paprika is a spice usually used in food dishes to add flavor to the meal you’re intending to eat.

According to Mccormick Science Institute, the spice is made from the dried, ground, ripened fruit of the capsicum annum family (it’s really close to red peppers).

There are many variations of paprika when it comes to its color and taste.

It will all depend on where it’s made globally and what pepper is used.

Examples of different paprika varieties are:

  • Sweet paprika
  • Smoked paprika
  • Green paprika
  • Red paprika
  • Yellow paprika
  • Hot paprika

Is Paprika Toxic To Dogs

The good news is No, paprika is not known to be toxic to dogs, but the spice can still cause your dog to have an upset stomach due to having capsaicin in it.

It can also cause skin, eye, and nasal irritation from being formed into a fine powder.

I know sometimes dogs are quick and find a way to get what they want.

Still, I would try my best to avoid feeding your dog this spice or foods made with it, such as paprika vegetables, paprika crisps, paprika chicken, etc.

It’s best to keep your pup away from anything made with it altogether.

Even though it has no toxic properties… I’m sure you, as a pet parent, like me would rather avoid taking the chance of your dog not feeling good from eating the paprika spice.

It really isn’t worth them getting an upset stomach from it, right?

What Happens If A Dog Eats Paprika

If your dog does happen to consume some paprika or food with the spice in it, don’t panic. Your pup will most likely be fine.

Just keep an eye out for any upset stomach issues.

And, If you do happen to notice your dog not feeling too good, remember to always contact your veterinarian and let them know what is going on.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

If you do not have a local veterinarian, you can always call a 24-hour emergency vet office in your local area.

You can also call ASPCA ( Animal Poison Control Center ), which is open 24/7, and they can help you with any questions you might have.
